Find Your Inner Talent

Find Your Inner Talent

1. Find your inner talent

Okay so I am an artist, eto yung talent ko. I earn and make a living out of it. But, I believe that everyone has his/her unique talent. Walang taong bobo.  Maybe in other aspects, yes, but let’s not go there.

Do you still love art?

Did you use to draw or paint when you were young but, you grow up and have to deal with the bigger picture of life about things like finding a real job? I have encountered this so many times, people telling me to get a REAL JOB! Maybe, its time to see if you still got the skills you left on pause to paint or draw. Drawing mo kaya jowa mo para matuwa naman sya tapos post mo sa Facebook para maiba naman diba? Draw your cat, your dog, yung bakuran nyo kung wala ka jowa…for now. Ikaw naman! Darating din yung The One mo uy!

Maybe there’s an architect in you na di mo na pursue? Draw your dream house kahit mali mali ang perspective design, post it on your wall, at wag mo tanggalin. The idea is there somehow when you look at your drawing it becomes your motivation for you to be smart and encourage you you na mag trabaho pa more than just hanging out, wasting time and doing nothing. The idea is there somehow when you look at your drawing it becomes your motivation. For you to be smart and encourage you na magtrabaho pa more rather than to hang out, waste time and do nothing. Look at it every day and tell yourself, “someday, I’m gonna build that house for my family kaya I need to strive more!”

Do you love music?

Remember when you were young, pinangarap mo your going to be a famous Rockstar someday…..pero di natupad? Maybe this is the time for you to work on your musical ability. Grab that dusty guitar, maybe start in learning to tune it first. Learn your basic chords. If you know how to sing, the better. Having a musical talent sometimes come in handy in the long run. Example? Well, you can kill a dead air in your group gatherings pag marunong ka mag gitara. You can be the celebrity of your crowd.  Pwede mo pang harana therefore baka mahanap mo na yung hinahanap hanap mong juwa, gitara lang pala ang kelangan mo. Kidding aside, many couples found their true love thru music. So maybe, just maybe, you need to work on your musical talent now habang walang trabaho. You don’t have to be super good at it, basta marunong ka, additional pogi points na yun bro. Ofcourse, not just the guitar, If you have a talent in singing, find time to take a bath naman this days of quarantine sa bahay. More reason to sing sa banyo. You like beat? Practice your drumming skills. Maraming palayok at kaldero sa kusina, you get the point. (ok, we’re getting informal here.)

How about cooking?

Maybe it’s time to learn new recipes since we are going to spend more time at home. Did you already make your groceries? The heck, not the hoarding of tissues and alcohol! Can you believe it once this pandemic is over, people fighting over tissue paper and alcohol will go down in history. Not to mention, the greedy humans resell this stuff 3 to 5 times the usual price. What a naughty way to earn a living in such a crisis! Buy groceries that involve natural food like fruits and vegetables, not junk food. Besides, fighting the coronavirus requires you to be healthy. Here in the highlands of Benguet, Baguio flourishes with vegetables. What a great way to learn to cook your traditional Chopsuey or maybe create your version of vegetable salads. Eat more vegetable guys.

What to do at home during the COVID-19 community quarantine. An Artist's Perspective.

Staying at home looks like our only option since we will be under quarantine for almost a month. It is disrupting our routine, jobs, sports activities, and everything else seems to come to a halt. Most of us have been spending our time on social media reading the news posts, ranting our thoughts about the situation, and keeping in touch with our friends online.

I’ve been seeing a lot of comments and arguments from my friends about what they should do now that they are forced to stay at home. These are the common sentiments of our kababayan during this outbreak, “di ako sanay sa bahay; anu gagawin ko sa probinsiya; wala akong kinikita pag nasa bahay ako; pare mas mapapadalas ang inuman natin ngayon”. We all have our own ways of dealing with the current situation but, let me share my thoughts and insights on how to stay active kahit nasa bahay tayo.

An Artist’s Perspective

Before anything else, what I am about to share with you is my daily routine. For those who don’t know me yet, I am a full-time artist and my studio is Sa Bahay. I do have a traditional business, an online business, and have other art client transactions too. I can carry out my transactions online because I am used to staying at home and still manage to earn a decent income and maintain work productivity even with the temptation of being in the comforts of your home.

Things to do at home

Here is a list of things that you can do to keep busy while staying at home. Whether to pass the time or to refine and learn the skills you put on hold, take advantage of the long break from work.

1. Find your inner talent

Okay so I am an artist, eto yung talent ko. I earn and make a living out of it. But, I believe that everyone has his/her unique talent. Walang taong bobo.  Maybe in other aspects, yes, but let’s not go there.

2. Create Additional Sources of Income

The majority of the people staying at home watch TV. Yes, it’s good for relaxing. But if done in excess, it becomes a dream killer. Why? Those long hours you spend on that couch looking at the screen can be used to work on your business, your sideline jobs, anything productive to earn you extra income. Remember that the road to poverty and unsuccessful life is from laziness, lack of motivation, and procrastination. Distractions pile up and restrict you from achieving your dream; a good life, a good house, a good car, a property, that dream restaurant you keep on working in your head, that Art Show you promised to fulfill, that vacation you promised to your partner. How can you create more income? Furthermore, how can you generate income from home?

In my situation, 60% of my earnings and transactions with clients are online. Yes, in this Computer age, getting a good connection online is a plus and is a must when you are in business. I remember, my wife and I, when we started our very first business, we took the traditional approach; getting a store in town, doing the regular 8-day hour shift, meeting the clients physically on site.

It’s a good plan and made us look good to own a store. But, for someone who is still starting, it was hard. You pay a high rent, you commute or drive going to the store, you get stuck in traffic, and you need to pay your employees even on low sales, not to mention that your only clients are limited in that specific area. Eventually, we had to close the shop and took a different approach. Forward to 6 years later, we earn better through our online transactions. It’s not simple during the start-up of a business, we started from scratch to build our clients list and keep the business going.

As an artist, I paint as a way of living.

The commission works, portraits, murals, gallery exhibits, anything that involves visual creativity. It’s a tough life when you pursue an art career, its the early years that are always the hardest. I was once an employee and it was a difficult decision to give up my day job. It took me 5 years of employment before I finally quit my job, start to stand on my own by using art as a primary source of income. It’s was hard starting over again. I started missing the 15-30 salary, the Christmas bonus, 13th-month pay, and other work incentives. But earning on your own has its plus sides. You are the boss of your own company, you have more freedom which includes time for family, you can travel anytime, and you can create and earn more income than a fixed salary. But it also comes with a bigger responsibility like managing and disciplining your work ethics, you pay your tax and health plans, you learn the art of budgeting, marketing, sales, and branding. Yes, Branding. As an artist, you yourself are a brand. You sell yourself, not just your art but your name. It’s a demanding industry but worth the hustle if you love what you’re doing.

Online transactions make easy-breezy to connect with clients anywhere in the world.

My art collectors, galleries, and other clients pay me in cashless methods by bank transfers or online deposits. It also reduces the use of actual cash thereby reducing the possible spread of the virus in this outbreak. Online selling is a trend nowadays, and you can do it from your home. Even while you’re at the office, you earn extra cash through online sales

3. Keep Your Body Busy

Keeping your body busy means you need to move. Starting with the basics, find time to pamper your house. It’s a long quarantine break, which is a great way to explore the corners of your home by cleaning and fixing that worn-out faucet, change the curtains, throw away old unusable items, basically anything to keep your home neat and tidy.

Work out

What better way to stay fit and physically healthy than to work out? Going to the gym is the best way to burn fat and build those muscles but, that’s not possible right now. Avoiding crowded places is a top priority, and we are not allowed to go outside due to the quarantine (or as others prefer to call it – lockdown, it’s a huge debate for the current situation). You can do your workout at home without gym equipment. Filipinos are born creative and innovative. Using a pail full of water for weights, using a tree for pull-ups, and basic abs exercise will not need any equipment. The point is you can do your intense workout even at home, better than sticking your face on your phone the whole day reading rants of opposing supporters of the government. Read them minimally. I believe it’s still useful to know the thoughts of others on significant issues.

4. Getting Smarter Everyday

What will separate you and make you one step ahead of other people? What will separate you and make you one step ahead of other people? Learn useful information and skills daily, not education in school nor a college degree, not the tsismis and fake news circulating everywhere but, LIFE SKILLS. Things to do at home like basic carpentry, sewing, or learning computer programs that may develop into a career path such as video editing, Photoshop, After Effects, 3ds Max, are among others. Free knowledge is just there waiting for you.

Free knowledge is readily waiting for you, and only need to know where to look online. Wala kang computer o internet? Okay then do the traditional way of learning, read books that interest you. Find your favorite topic. Be it Science, Environment, Fashion Designs, Art, Car designs and concepts, start hoarding knowledgeable books and magazines.

What’s your favorite topic, Science? Environment? Fashion Designs? Art? Car designs and concepts? Maybe its time to do hoarding of Knowledge books and magazines. Ang dami sa Book Sale, heck you can even score 3 books for 100 pesos. What if I hate reading? As mentioned before, I believe that guys need to learn the manly stuff like carpentry, power tool handling, welding (if you have a machine available). How about that old car sitting in your garage? Maybe you can fix that now? Ladies, you know guys love a woman who can cook a good meal or bake cookies and pastries.

5. The Art of Growing Plants in a Pot

If you live in the provinces, you definitely won’t bother planting in a pot. You got a wide area of soil for plants. But when you are on isolation, in a condo or just your house for that matter, having a plant inside can make a huge difference in reducing stress in a confined environment.

In Art, the color green is relaxing to the eyes and refreshing for the brain. In interior design, the color green beautifies the surrounding by giving contrast to pieces of furniture over the natural element. Some practice growing fruits and vegetables on pots, which is an ideal way of creating resources in the event this pandemic goes on for months. Planting fast-growing vegetables or crops in your backyard can give you food if we ran out of food supplies. It’s an extreme situation but quite wise for a long term solution if there will be a massive food shortage and lockdown. Like in the movie, The Martian, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) have been planting potatoes for his long term survival on Mars, a great example of human survival relying on backyard plants.

6. Stay Away From Vices

This isn’t actually one of those things to do at home but, a good habit to keep. A good man will choose necessities like healthy foods, water, and proper hygiene kits over Alcohol drinks and Cigarettes. In this trying time, a man is a fool if he still bothers buying vices when the situation might get worse. Reducing the use of cigarettes is a must since the COVID-19 virus attacks the lungs, and smoking will weaken your body’s defense. When drinking, nakaugalian nating mga pinoy ang tagayan thus, sharing one glass pang tagay for the entire tropa is a long time tradition. It’s just a clear example of quickly spreading the virus through shared saliva. Iwas inom muna mga brad.

7. Read the Bible and Pray

I am not against any religion. I believe people have the right and freedom to choose his/her own beliefs. As a Catholic, I think reading the bible definitely will make you a better person because the answers to our questions are all written in the book. We only need silence and time to understand its content.

For me, we should pray by our hearts and not by words of a written prayer. The Lord already knows what is in writing but wants to hear the desires in our hearts. Including God in our daily lives gives us strength, especially in these troubled times.

These are just some of my insights and opinion on our current situation. If may natamaan ako or hurt someone else’s feelings, I apologize. I’m not hitting on anyone. Feel Free to share and add your opinions in the comment section. Keep safe everyone! We’ll get over this. God bless!
